Our Values

At St Joseph's School, our Josephite Charism and values of the New Zealand Curriculum underpin our school values.

Our Josephite Charism

Our school was founded by the Josephite sisters, led by Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop. We celebrate her life together with South Canterbury Josephite every year, alternating the host school.

In New Zealand, students are encouraged to value:

  • excellence, by aiming high and by persevering in the face of difficulties

  • innovation, inquiry, and curiosity, by thinking critically, creatively, and reflectively

  • diversity, as found in our different cultures, languages, and heritages

  • equity, through fairness and social justice

  • community and participation for the common good

  • ecological sustainability, which includes care for the environment

  • integrity, which involves being honest, responsible, and accountable and acting ethically.

They will also respect themselves, others, and human rights.

Our School Values

We promote attitudes and values based on the Gospel values, teachings of Jesus Christ and the Josephite charism. These values are introduced at school assemblies, modelled and displayed in the classroom and playground both by teachers and children. Certificates are presented to children who display these values at assembly.
